The Army of the Republic of Lithuania (Lietuvos Respublikos Kariuomene)

by Audrius Slapsinskas, 23 July 2003

The Army of the Republic of Lithuania (Lietuvos Respublikos kariuomene) - The flag is drawn according to the picture from back cover of magazine "Karys" (Warrior), number 4, 1992. I think the relationship of the width of the flag to the length should be 1:1.2, i.e. same dimentions as President's flag. The flag of the Army of the Republic of Lithuania was confirmed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania on November 21, 2000 (full text of Decree in Lithuanian: <www3.lrs.lt>). Author - N. Treinys.

Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoons

by Marc Pasquin, 26 December 2004

The flag of Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion as can be seen at <www.kam.lt> . It would appear to be based on the lithuanian infrantry design but with a black background and the battalion badge (a 3 headed dragon holding a sword) replacing the national emblem. I have made the flag as per the image which is the reverse (hoist to the right). As the dragon is facing the opposite side then on their badge, it is probably safe to assume that the observe is identical apart from the orientation of the dragon.   Thanks to an online lithuanian dictionary, I have found out that the motto is "Overcome or ....." (couldn't find z^usim). If i had to guess, the last part could be something along the lines of "or nothing" or "or death" . The date under the dragon is the foundation of the unit under the name of "Klaipeda Motor-Airborne Battalion". It was then changed on 28 October 1993 to "7th Dragoon Coast Battalion" and finaly on 22 february 2000 to its current name. The flag itself was awarded in july 1996.

That's no dragon, that's a wyvern (only two legs).
James Dignan, 26 September 2004

The motto is "Nugalėsim arba Žūsim" (without the lithuanian characters "Nugalesim arba Zusim", which literally translates to "We will defeat [them] or we will die."
